I love running…
I love running in the rain…
I love running in the rain, in the dark…
I only have time to run in the dark.
My runs today either happen in the early morning before most people deem it reasonable to rise or after the kids go to bed. That’s ok, in fact, I enjoy it. When I was training for sprint and Olympic triathlons I would often train before or after work. In the winter months, this meant dawn or dusk, most days both. The reality is for a lot of athletes and amateur athletes there’s no way to avoid the dark.
That being said safety Is definitely a concern. I like many who are hoofing it on the roads in the early morning or evening like to see and be seen. I’m intimately aware of the costs of not being seen, In 8th grade, I was hit by a car in the middle of the day.
To combat this I wore headlamps, a reflective vest, and sometimes held a flashlight. Like many runners, I can’t stand having something in my hands-on long training runs. The bouncing of the flashlight or headlamp was tiring and at times made me sick (pain point). Even while trail running in Colorado it made sense to bring as much daylight as possible on my runs – One evening my wife and I ran up on a Wolf! #painpoint
So I got to the sketch pad…
